Yesterday my students received their O'Level results. Heard that some of them won't be coming to college anymore. Anyway my class have been giving me headache with their poor attendance these past few weeks. Below is a list of the top ten reasons given by those are always absent from college without MC.

1. "I got stomachache/headache but I took some medicine so I didn't go to see the doctor"
2. "My rabbit is sick and there's no one at home to bring it to the vet"
3. "I went to my dad's office to help him"
4. "My alarm clock didn't ring and by the time I woke up it's too late to come to college"
5. "My kitten is pregnant"
6. "I went back to my secondary school to collect something"
7. "Yesterday not public holiday meh?"
8. "I must stay home to look after my baby brother"
9. "Yesterday's lessons very boring"
10. "I got urgent family matter"

Actually all of the above are old and stupid and commonly used reasons, but somehow they still seem to be popular among students these days. I'm still waiting for new and innovative reasons that students can use to excuse themselves from school without MC. So please stop using any of the above and be more creative.

Hi my dear 2H, I'm back. I may have been gone, but you are not forgotten. Actually I still receive updates about you from Miss Tan, and sometimes from Daniel and Larrison. I'm happy to hear that Weishen has done rather well for his Maths, which is good since I know that he is putting in quite an effort in this subject.

Now I have 4 classes in TPJC. The class size in JC is around 25 on average, so quite easy to manage. But sometimes the students can still be very stupid and childish and immature and deserve a tight slap from my iron-palm. Then some of them think that they are "adults" already while in fact they still have the mentality of a secondary school kid. Well, the only positive draw from this is that they can make the lesson interesting with their silly antics and most of the time it is fun having them in class.

My CCAs are choir and rock-climbing. Choir is boring, but rock climbing rocks (since I know how to climb as well). Next February I'll be going for an adventure instructor course. So I'll be able to conduct training activities (flying fox, tree-top confidence etc) for my students at any adventure centre. I think I enjoy my time for CCA more than classroom teaching. Hehe.

So now everyone's separated, but can someone tell me which are the classes that you will be in? In any case, I can still remember all of you after these while, so I'm sure most of you will not forget all the great memories over the past 2 years that made 2H such an interesting and wonderful class.

Why this blog will never become famous

Happened to drive past NCHS yesterday and lots of memories just came back to me. I think I really miss the people there, not the school itself. Afterall, it is the people and the things they do that make up the school; the school is just a physical landscape in SengKang.

Well, I felt an urge to post something on this blog, for this is one of the few channels that I have to remain in contact with some people from NCHS. Then a thought struck me. Can this blog ever become famous like those mentioned in the media and papers and having daily readership exceeding 10000? I guess not. For me I'd think that a daily readership of 100 is already a remarkable tribute to this blog. Much as I desire some attention and publicity from the media, I do not think this blog will ever get any. There are some reasons why:

This blog does not discuss any serious topics or issues that concern others. Who will be interested in the birthday greetings that I write? I think people are more interested in gossips or scandals regarding teachers, but who writes them here? Who cares when 2H will be having the next outing?
This blog does not defame others, as far as the history of this blog stands. None posted critical stuff about other people, and most of the entries concern only people of 2H. At most we defame ourselves or make ourselves sound like fools. Occasionally there may appear some people who would tag provoking words here which somehow heats up the peaceful atmosphere here. Even if they speak ill of each other, it would at most evolve into an internal dispute and never a legal tussle. I hope my students know the laws. Anyway I should get my financial adviser to help me plan set aside some money in case I need to go to the courts.
I do not post any nudes photos on this blog. So far there has been no request for me to post any either. And photos of myself and Miss Tan would gather no publicity. Neither are there links to porn or indecent websites here. I trust that my students (especially the guys) are intelligent enough to search for porn by themselves if "there is a need to".
I do not publish this blog's URL on my Friendster or any profile that I have. I do not know about the rest. So the only way people can view this blog is through sheer coincidence or by word of mouth. Hence, publicity for this blog is way behind those with media coverage. How to fight? Neither do I ask friends to advertise this blog to others nor do I link this blog to anywhere. Thus there's minimum publicity.
My language proficiency is limited. As humorous and funny as I can be, so far, I have yet to exploit fully the power of the language to express myself. I am also not controversial enough. I do not have enough scandals to make people curious about me. Neither do I think 2H have interesting scandals to share. I am not creative enough. I don't carry a digital camera around taking pictures of funny signboards, notices and road signs and posting them here. Neither do I take sneak pictures of pretty people to post here. I am not sharp enough to observe funny trends or remember interesting conversations or jokes.
And lastly, this blog serves only to NCHS 2H and their affiliates. Most of the posts on this blog is about 2H. I don't think 2h need the whole nation to know about them to reaffirm their existence. I'm sure that even if daily readership to this blog gathers only a maximum of 41, 2H will know that they are one of the most interesting and happening classes in NCHS, at least in my humble eyes they are.

I came across this puzzle which I thought would be interesting to share with everyone. I thought for a while and I got the answer quite fast, so I think you should also get the answer if you think carefully enough.

Ok, I'm sure everyone knows how to expand (x - a)(x - b). The answer is x^2 - xa - xb + ab.

The puzzle is, what is (x - a)(x - b)(x - c)...(x - y)(x - z )?

Memoir of my Practicum

Yesterday I went back to NCHS to visit my 2H class. I was happy to see most of them around when I arrived. I think I didn't see Debbie, Desmond, Ruying and Huiwen around. To some of them, that was probably the last time I'll be seeing them. I'm going to Tampines Junior College for my permanent teaching posting, which means that I will have very little chance of seeing students from 2H again.

I think I was really lucky to have taught 2H. I still vividly remember the first time I walked into the class with Miss Tan Yih Tyan. At that time, the seating arrangement in 2H was different from when I left NCHS. I remember during then Weishen and the guys were all seated near the window at the side of the teacher's desk, and Crystal was all the way at the back corner of the class. Wenmin was one of the first few to speak to me and ask me questions. Priscilla, Joanne, Vivienne, Julia and Debbie were sitting together at the back of the class, and my initial impression of them was that they were potential "Charlie's Devils". Hahaha. But thank goodness, they turn out to be more angelic than devilish.

The good attitude and behaviour of 2H persuaded me to use tidbits as an incentive for group works. I'm thankful that my group activities turned out quite successfully and that most were spontaneous and cooperative. My first group activity was fine and cheers to Crystal and Fengzhu's group for being the first to win the tidbits. The last group activity was held on that friday where the last two periods were extended to accomodate an extra remedial period. In that activity, each group were tasked to solve at least one question from my worksheet, and I think most of the groups won something. I must admit that I feel guilty at times for being unfair in the rewards. Hope none of them take it to heart. Hahaha.

Yesterday my friend asked me, would I prefer a quiet class to teach, or a noisy class? I told her I'd take the noisy class. Haha. I think when a class is too quiet, you feel that you are not relating to them and it's like you're talking to the wall. Which was what i felt in my 2 math classes at the beginning. But as the weeks went by, they started to become noisier. Although it may appear as lack in discipline, but I enjoyed it a lot more than when the class was very disciplined and quiet. At least there were spontaneous questions and responses to questions I asked. My supervisor who sat in for my lesson observation also felt that 2H was quite fun to teach despite being noisy and unattentive at times.

My first and last periods in NCHS were coincidentally 2H. My last day in school happened to be the Sports Day, so there were some who were absent for my final lesson with them. It was a touching day to remember because there were some tearful partings that day. I'm grateful to everyone who organised and stayed back for the session after school on 28th April to bid me farewell. The cake was nice and the gifts were priceless. "Thanks" to Yongyi and Debbie and Priscilla for smearing cake on my face, costing me lots of money for the rescue facial that evening. Cheers to all for being so sporting in front of camera and for the photogenic poses.

Gonna miss everyone in 2H man...

Hope they do well for their mid-year exams (especially mathematics), otherwise I will feel guilty messing them up. Hahaha.

Friendship

A lesson in life - there will always come an end to all things good and bad. Today marks the end of my 10-week teaching training in NCHS. It's been an eventful and unforgettable experience for me. Sad to leave my classes, not the school. After all, my students are the ones whom I will remember.

But there are some things that can last for a long long time. And one of them is friendship. I urge all in 2H to cherish the time you share in the joyous company of one another, for separation beacons at the end of the year. The bond that you've forged in 2 years will make a good foundation for a lasting friendship. Hopefully this blog can also be a good platform for 2H to stay in contact even when everyone is re-allocated to different classes come Sec 3.

I hope 2H will always stay fun, adorable and cohesive. Stay true to one another. Always cherish your friends. I will miss 2H.

Today I was touched by angels, a whole class of them. Yes it's the 2H angels who inked an unforgettable moment in my memory. I went to 2H where they had a fruit cake prepared for me with the lights off and the ambience well-tuned to the farewell treat. Then we took several photos and I was so touched by their card and the watch. The card was the best card that I've ever received, cos it's got so many photos and well-wishes in it. The worst thing that happened was that Priscilla, Debbie, Wanqin and Yongyi smashed cake and rubbed cream on me. I had to go for facial with special treatment in the evening to save my beautiful face. Haha. Thanks to all for contributing to this farewell treat.

I just received the Mock Exam papers from Miss Tan, and so I started adding up the marks and tabulated the result list. Overall the class did rather well. Only 8 failures out of a class size of 40. But since this is a trial exam, it is definitely easier than the real thing next week. I've heard from other teachers that the Mid-Year paper for Maths would be difficult. I fear that 2H might not be able to cope with it. So to those who failed their Mock Exam this time round, please work doubly hard for your Mid-Year paper and don't give up on the subject. To those who have shown improvement and to those who have passed this Mock Exam, please continue to strive for better results and not deteriorate.

Yesterday I heard that Weishen is always being "bullied" by his classmate. How can you people do this to Weishen? Hahaha. Luckily there is Wanqin who is always there to protect him. But from Wanqin, I heard that Weishen will "bully" her. Hmmm... this sounds rather ironical. Wanqin gets "bullied" by the one whom she is protecting from being "bullied".

And I noticed that the command of English in some of the postings seems out of this world. Must be some "sms" or "msn" language that is popular among the young these days. Had a hard time trying to decipher what each unseen term means.

Opps, the bell is going to ring any time soon. 3 days countdown.

Today I met up with my 2H class again. After the Maths period, Priscilla came over with a "survey form" asking me several questions. I had class with 3F, so I didn't have time to entertain her. During recess, Wanqin came over to me with the same piece of "survey form". She asked me questions about cake and Jack Russells. Reminded me of my little baby.

This is what I conjecture. I presume that my dear students are planning to get me some farewell gifts in the form of dog food or accessories. If this is true, I do hope they don't waste their money cos I have no dogs at the moment. That was in the past. The best parting gift for me would be for them to improve upon their Maths results for the Mid-Yrs. Please don't spend your money on anything for me. Thank you.

Today 2H had a Maths Mock Exam after school. Walked around and was rather pleased to see some improvement in students (like Weishen and Crystal). Was also disappointed to see some giving up easily. As a whole, I think the overall performance for this paper should be promising.

4 more days to my departure from Nan Chiau.
